Curious about the pottery process and why it takes so long to create? Here are the steps to create a perfect piece!
Greenware:
During the greenware phase, the clay is wet and malleable. This is when the clay is formed by the potter into the shape they want it to be.
Greenware: Leather-Hard
The clay is still somewhat moist in this stage, but it’s hardened to the point where it holds shape on its own and is starting to dry out. Trimming of the pots are done at this phase.
Greenware: Bone-dry
At this point, there should be no moisture in the clay, and it’s ready to be fired for the first time. If there is any moisture present in the clay, it will explode in the kiln, so make sure it’s 100% dry!
Bisque:
The clay has been fired once, and is ready to be washed and glazed. 2-4 coats of glaze are applied to the vessel, and it’s ready to be fired once again.
Glazeware:
The piece is finally done, and you can enjoy it. It has vitrified, or basically made the clay into a glass-like vessel, and can be safely used for eating and drinking if it has food-safe glaze.
